Ann’s Story

Support in the community …. a success story

Ann a waitress at Pinnies Tea Rooms in Godmanchester. Part of the Huntingdon Mencap Family

Ann has been supported by the Society since 2011. When we first met Ann she lived in a flat on her own, and although she coped well with everyday tasks, she was very lonely and had little confidence to speak to people in the community.

We started visiting Ann to provide emotional and social support and she thoroughly enjoyed the social group meetings and outings Huntingdon Mencap organised. She started to make friends, but because of the distances she needed to travel it meant Ann could only benefit from the social group sessions when we could support her with transport.

Over time an opportunity became available for Ann to move to our sheltered living scheme here in Godmanchester; it meant she could maintain her independence, with her own flat, but companionship and advice was now on hand whenever she needed it. It wasn’t long after Ann moved in that she became part of the Rectory Gardens community, enjoying feeling part of a group of caring people. Ann joined the local church and is a regular member of the congregation. Godmanchester has a fantastic community and she now felt able to join in with local events; also enjoying the ability walk to the shops and other town amenities. The one thing she still wanted, though, was a job …..

This is where Pinnies comes into the story; as part of Ann’s support package she wanted to work, but a particular work experience placement was needed. Although she had been to Pinnies and liked the idea of joining the team her placement needed to be managed to ensure her best interests were kept to the fore.

Very nervously Ann started with just carrying out the washing up for a few hours once a week. Over time her confidence blossomed and she quickly became a valued member of the Pinnies staff; from very humble beginnings she now takes orders, clears tables, washes up, serves food and more importantly has the confidence to chat.

Ann is happy, settled, and feels valued as a member of the community ….

This is what we try to do in so many people’s lives and with your support we can carry on.

Giving someone their smile back is priceless ……..
